Information on Placement for Incoming Students — Undergraduates
Students entering the University as freshmen who intend ever to take Math 110, 130, 152, or 231 are required to take the SAT Subject Test, Mathematics Level 2, before the end of their senior year of high school. Students should have their scores sent to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Office of Undergraduate Admissions so that they will be available for placement purposes during summer registration. Students who do not have scores will not be entitled to register for the above courses.
Note that Math 116, 117, 118, and 119 all satisfy the General Education QR (Quantitative Reasoning) requirement and are open to all students.
Scores on the test range from 200 to 800 and determine one of three placement levels as follows:
| Scores | Courses |
|---|---|
| 200–510 | Math 110 |
| 520–590 | Math 130 or Math 152 |
| 600-800 | Math 231 |
Students who have taken the Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) exams are awarded course credit and placement as follows:
| Exam | Scores | Credit | Placement |
|---|---|---|---|
| AP Calculus AB | 1 or 2 | none | based on SAT II |
| 3, 4, or 5 | Math 231 | Math 232 | |
| AP Calculus BC | 1 or 2 | None | based on SAT-II |
| 3, 4, or 5 | Math 231 and Math 232 | Math 233 | |
| IB (HL) | 1, 2, 3, or 4 | none | based on SAT-II |
| 5, 6, or 7 | Math 231 and Math 232 | Math 233 |
Notes
- The SAT Subject Test, Mathematics Level 1, cannot be used for placement into Math 231. It can only be used for placement out of Math 110 with a score of 520 or higher.
- The subsidiary level (SL) version of the International Baccalaureate is not accepted for credit at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
- While a score of 2 on either AP calculus examination does not give course credit, it does grant exemption from Math 110.
