The course descriptions that can be accessed from this page are more detailed and up to date than the course descriptions
found in the Graduate School Handbook of UNC, which are linked with the home page of the Graduate School. Graduate courses
accessible to first year students, although not always taken in the first year, are those numbered under 200. Syllabi for
courses under 200 are relatively detailed and standardized, especially for those courses upon which the five Ph.D. qualifying
exams are based (all except 189 and 190). As course numbers increase above 200, the syllabi become less detailed and more
flexible, with course content left increasingly to the instructor. In many cases a more complete course description can be found
through the home page of the current instructor.
Starting with the Fall 2006 semester, Math courses will be renumbered. The new numbers are given in parentheses below. Click
