The most "friendly" type of equation is the Linear Equation.

The reason that this type of equation is relatively easy to solve is because we only need to use the rules of arithmetic.

In other words,  as long as you feel comfortable with the operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division,  you don't need to feel intimidated by linear equations.

A linear equation in one variable, say x, only contains that variable in the form "x," but not  or  ,  etc.

For example,    is a linear equation involving the variable x.

The standard form of a "linear equation in x" is:

with "a," "b," and "c" representing real numbers.

To solve such an equation, our goal will be to isolate the variable "x."
