Equations and inequalities are perhaps the most important tools that allow us to take problems from the world around us and, using variable expressions,  "translate" them into the language of mathematics.

We will tackle this sometimes difficult translation process when we examine "real-world problems" in the sections on Applications.

But first we need to develop some basic rules and techniques for solving equations in a systematic way, so that we don't have to rely on guessing.
