The concept of "function" is one of the most important in all of mathematics.

The good news is that we already have the basic tools needed for working with functions. 

In other words, a one variable function can be thought of as simply a formula (or equation) that represents a relationship between two quantities

Moreover, a one variable function formula has the following special property:

For each input value (usually "x"),  the formula produces 
EXACTLY ONE output value (usually "y").

This special property "makes the equation more dependable" in situations where we need to describe some real-world relationship using a formula.

This section also introduces some special notation as well as some new vocabulary for working with functions.
