Lowest Terms
Explanation

Objectives

Examples

Whenever a fraction contains the same factor in both the numerator and the denominator we can "reduce" the fraction by cancelling the common term.

Remember also

  • when multiplying fractions, we follow the rule:
  •  when dividing fractions, we follow the rule:
.

For example, we can simplify  as follows:

First we factor each piece to get

.

Now we can see which terms will cancel, namely the
" " and " ."

So our final answer is:  .

This answer is now "reduced" and "in factored form."
